The problem
Wigan council contacted DSR in 2012 due to the deterioration in the terracotta façade including boundary walls and gateposts. The maintenance previously had been overlooked and it was time to make good the defective units. The heavy passing traffic was causing vibration issues and the gatepost had suffered major problems.
The solution
DSR surveyed every section of terracotta masonry providing the council with a comprehensive report on the current defects and the costs associated with the repair and reinstatement. We were able to offer considerable cost savings by repairing the units rather than replacing which would have also incurred a 6 months delay to the project. We were also able to replicate the existing gatepost cappings using traditional techniques and skilled tradesmen back to their existing profiles and original look.
Preservation
The Town Hall’s facade is now fully preserved for the local community to enjoy. We are proud to have been trusted with such a key project and playing a part in such important role within the Wigan borough redevelopment plans.
